Day 16 and 17: Exploring City Hall and the Police Department in Denton

October 21 and 22, 2024

After a normal school day, this day began with a short bus ride to Denton City Hall. Since we arrived early, Mr. Shade shared some history about the City Hall and the nearby park. When the Mayor arrived, he spoke about his efforts to make the City Hall more accessible, including his goal of making Denton the “City of Halloween.” Inside the meeting room, where weekly city meetings are held, the Mayor discussed plans to revitalize downtown Denton. He answered our questions in detail, explained his role, and posed for photos before we said goodbye.

Next, we spent an hour and a half at Denton Square, exploring shops and enjoying lunch.

Afterward, we visited the Denton Police Department. While waiting for the tour, we got a close look at police motorcycles and asked officers about their equipment. Mr. Meister even volunteered for a handcuff demonstration. Inside we saw the patrol writing room, the SWAT meeting and locker rooms. We were shown different equipment of the S.W.A.T. team, including two robots. Then we visited the dispatchers and got an insight into their work. At the jail, we had the opportunity to step into a cell (no worries – the door stayed open!). Our last stop was the training centre, where we saw simulation rooms for various scenarios.

At the end of the tour we thanked the officers for showing us around and Greta handed over German chocolate as an extra thank you.
